Police Beat - Catching Up
I live in Menomonee Falls, just outside the City of Milwaukee. When I open the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, I read about murders, rapes, and armed robbery. When my husband and I drive "up North" to Markesan, Wisconsin, I find the police reports somewhat refreshing. There are a few serious crimes, but most police calls involve dogs, cows, car lockouts, funeral processions, and lost items. I haven't posted a Markesan Police Beat summary since last summer. I'm here to catch up, courtesy of the staff writers of the Markesan Regional Reporter (I don't include the more serious crimes, of course) ....
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 - Utility Problem - While on routine patrol, police observed two street lights were out. Police noted the location of both lights and informed the city clerk of the necessary maintenance.
Monday, August 12, 2013 - Juvenile problem - While on routine patrol, police observed a juvenile driving a mini dirt bike on N. Margaret Street and Vista Blvd. Police noted a previous confrontation with the juvenile, when Markesan School District personnel were present, during which the juvenile was instructed not to drive the dirt bike on school property due to safety concerns. Police escorted the juvenile to his home and spoke with his guardian who expressed similar concern over the juvenile's safety.
Same day - Property damage accident - Two vehicles collided at a local gas station when one vehicle backed away from the gas pump and into a second, stationary vehicle that was waiting to use the same pump. Very minor damage was reported to the front passenger side of the second vehicle. No one was injured during the accident.
Friday, August 16, 2013 - Agency assist - Police were mutual aided to the area of State Highway 73 and County Highway U in the Town of Manchester for assistance with emergency lighting for cattle in the roadway. Police arrived on scene and provided assistance where necessary until being dismissed from the scene by sheriff's office personnel.
Same day - Lockout - Police were dispatched to Markesan High School on the report of an individual who was locked out of her vehicle. Police confirmed the registration of the vehicle to the complainant and successfully gained entry to the vehicle.
Saturday, September 14, 2013 - Escort - Markesan police assisted a funeral home with a funeral escort within the City of Berlin. The escort occurred without incident.
Same day - Property damage accident - Police were contacted by an individual regarding an accident that occurred. The individual stated he has exchanged information with the other party and is currently repairing the damage caused to the other person's vehicle.
Friday, September 13, 2013 - Vandalism - Police were notified by dispatch of two juveniles spray-painting on the South Bridge Street bridge. Police arrived on scene and saw the two individuals along with multiple cans of spray paint in the area. Police asked the juveniles what they were doing, at which point the first individual stated repeatedly that someone had spray-painted the bridge. Police looked at the second individual who simply shrugged his shoulders. Police then asked the second individual why he had paint all over his hands, at which point the second individual confessed to the vandalism. Police transported each juvenile to his respective parents' home to tell the parents what had happened. The parents stated the boys would be put to work cleaning up the vandalism. Police stated that any further cleanup costs would be split between the two juveniles.
Sunday, September 29, 2013 - Animal Problem - Police were called to an E. John Street address on an anonymous report of a barking dog. Police knocked on the front door at which point a dog started barking inside the residence, but no one answered the door. Police requested that dispatch call the residence, but no one answered the phone. A short time later, the dog stopped barking and police cleared from the scene.
Friday, September 27, 2013 - Found Property - Markesan police were informed by the Markesan Public Library that a scooter had been on the library's bike rack for the past two days. Police arrived on scene, picked up the scooter, and placed it in the police department's lost and found.
Friday, April 25, 2014 - Found Property - Police were called to a local merchant, where an employee reported that a customer had left his concealed-carry license lying on the counter. Police retrieved the license and attempted to contact the individual without success. The license was placed in the Police Department's lost and found.
Tuesday, April 22, 2014 - Lockout - Police were called to a vehicle lockout. While on scene, and before attempting to gain access to the vehicle, the complainant's mother arrived with a spare set of keys. Police cleared the scene.
